Phonotropes are a way of exploring and experimenting with animation - It follows similiar principals to 'zoetropes' and other moving animation devices but works with a flat page, designed to work with the 45rpm cycle of a standard record player.
The animation is then viewed through a camera shooting at 25fps which syncs with the spinning disc creating a smooth animation.
This is a brilliant workshop across multiple ages as it will work successfully with simple mark-making as well as more complex looped animation sequences.
Variations:
Markmaking - Discs can be used to create marks, flowing lines etc that will then animate on screen

Simple Shapes - Simple shapes can be applied with pens, simple stickers, cut shapes etc - this is especially good to learn the process
Drawing - Animated drawings can be created with multiple media, these work especially well with crisp lines and looped sequences.
3D - Small sculptures can be created that change shape/size with easily manipulable materials such as plasticine.
Photography - Simple looped photographic animations can be created by taking sequences of photos, or by splitting video files into stills, printing and applying to the disc.
